WHAT IS IMAGO RELATIONSHIP THERAPY?
Imago Relationship Therapy was developed by Harville Hendrix, PhD., who is the author of the best selling book GETTING THE LOVE YOU WANT.
WHAT IS AN IMAGO?
Dr. Hendrix believes that we all have an unconscious image of the opposite sex that we have been forming since birth. Imago comes from the Latin term for image and your IMAGO is essentially a composite picture of the people who influenced us most strongly at an early age. This composite includes all the positive and negative experiences we had growing up with significant caretakers but mainly refers to the negative experiences that left certain “wounds” unhealed.
HOW DOES THIS IMAGO EFFECT MY RELATIONSHIPS?
Our partner selection is based both on a wish to find someone who will not re-injure us in similar ways as we experienced growing up and guides us towards others, unconsciously, who are likely to do just that, trigger us to re-experience these unfinished aspects of childhood. So, in marriage we are likely to encounter these wounds without understanding what is happening to us and our relationship, and resort to the same maladaptive strategies that we used as children to survive these wounds.
WHAT WOULD BE THE BENEFIT TO WORKING THIS WAY IN MY RELATIONSHIP?
Marriage then becomes, through the eyes of Imago Therapy, an opportunity to understand these wounds in ourselves and our partners, and construct new strategies that can help us help ourselves, and each other to finish the work of childhood and learn what adult love is really all about.
WHAT ROLE DOES THE THERAPIST PLAY IN IMAGO THERAPY?
IMAGO THERAPY is conducted with active participation between therapist and clients and emphasizes both dealing with underlying past issues effecting the relationship in the present as well as skill learning, and in-between session assignments to facilitate progress.
IS IMAGO RELATIONSHIP THERAPY JUST FOR MARRIED COUPLES?
Imago Relationship can also be very effective with helping Single people understand their relationship patterns and be better equipped to “Getting the Love they Want”. This approach has also been extremely helpful for pre-marital counseling with couples seeking to understand their relationship better before getting married. Imago Therapy is not restricted to only opposite sex relationships but is a framework for understanding many different kinds of relationships including Parent/Child, Sibling Relationships and all relational experiences that activate intense reactions that interfere with the growth of the people involved.
